I know, that’s a crappy name for a blog post, but so what. It describes how I feel to a T.
A story of mine just got accepted by a pretty respected literary magazine here in Australia! And even better, it’s a difficult story, about an Indigenous boy, told in the first person, and I am not Indigenous. The guest editor is though, and he’s happy with the story’s thrust and the way the characterisation has been handled, the empathy and reality of it. He has given me some excellent direction in how to tighten the story further and really get its point across.
For me as a writer at the start of my publishing career, this is a big deal. For me as a writer with something to say, and important feelings about how my country progresses, this is validation. And for the work and slog and thought that I’ve put into this story, to get behind the eyes of a character whose circumstances I can only imagine, it’s wonderful encouragement. I can do it!
So, some work to do, but just quietly,
