A story of mine has just been accepted by a respected literary magazine here in Australia! It’s a difficult story, about an Indigenous boy, told in the first person. The guest editor (Stephen Kinnane) is happy with the story’s thrust and the way the characterisation has been handled. He has given me some excellent direction in how to tighten the story further and really get its point across.

For me as a writer at the start of my publishing career, this is a big deal. For me as a writer with something to say, and important feelings about how my country progresses, this is validation. And for the work and slog and thought that I’ve put into this story, to get behind the eyes of a character whose circumstances I can only imagine, it’s wonderful encouragement. I can do it!

So, some work to do, but just quietly,
